Special Programs

At the present time, we have the following special programs in our school:

Empire State Grant in the Arts: We were one of three schools in the State of New York to receive an Empire State Grant in the Arts. The goals of this grant are to sharpen students' skills in the area of communication, develop linkages between the disciplines, develop school spirit and provide positive experiences for students to work together. Resident artists are invited into the school to work with teachers and students to achieve these goals. At the present time Roundabout Theater, Arts Genesis, Digital Shakespeare, and Enact are involved at our school. We are in the third year of this grant.

Talent Classes: Our school offers Band, Strings, Chorus and Art to those students who demonstrate a talent and interest in those areas. Students are programmed to receive instruction in our Talent Classes 4 periods a week. There are two Arts Festivals held at the school each year which highlight the work of these students.

ESL: Our school offers English as A Second Language to all entitled students. Students receive daily assistance.

Homework Assistance, Tutoring and Recreational Program: This program operates on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45 PM to 4:45 PM. This program is sponsored by the Rachel Carson Community Association Inc. Participating students must register for this program. The cost is $5.00 per year. Youngsters may participate in the Homework Assistance & Tutoring Component or take part in the Recreational component.

After School Program for "At Risk'' Students: Students who are "At Risk'' of not meeting Promotional Standards, may receive assistance in Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science. Registration for this program is required and class size is limited. Parents may get details from the Assistant Principals and Guidance Counselors.
