Frequently Asked Questions
What time must my child be in school?
School hours are 8:10 AM to 2:40 PM. All students must be lined up in front
of the school by 8:00 AM. Students who arrive after the late bell, will
be required to serve detention for lateness after school on that same
day. Lateness detention is over at 3:00 PM. The parents/guardians of students
who continually arrive late to school, may be required to meet with the
Principal, Assistant Principal and/or Dean regarding this lateness (see
Discipline Code).
What does my child need for school each day?
Every student is expected to come prepared for school each day with a
loose-leaf binder (8½ by 10), pencils, pens and textbooks. Students
who have gym, must come prepared with a change of clothing and sneakers.
Specific requirements for individual classes may be made by Subject teachers.
Is there a Dress Code?
The parents of students who come to school inappropriately dressed will be contacted. Appropriate clothing must be worn to school. A new dress code will take effect in September 2005. Please see the proposed dress code on our site
How are Metro Cards distributed?
Students who are zoned for our school AND who live more than 3 mites
from school are entitled to receive a full fair Metro Card; others living
between 1.5 mikes and 3 mikes are entitled to a Reduced Fair Metro Card.
Metro cards are issued at the beginning of the school year. These cards
are like cash and must be safe guarded. A note from a parent will be required
before a replacement is issued; there may be a waiting period for a replacement
in which the student will be responsible for paying the 111 fair on the
bus.
Are students required to have a Photo ID Card?
Yes, all students are required to visibly wear their photo ID card while
in school. These cards will also be needed to receive Free or Reduced
priced lunch since the cards are scanned for this. Replacement cards are
available at a fee (First time $1.00, Second time $2.00, etc.)
How many times a year are Report Cards issued?
Report cards are issued 4 times a year. The specific dates will be announced
each year. However, Report Cards are given out in the following Months:
November, February, April and June (last day of school). Parent/Teacher
Conferences take place in November and February of each school year.
What happens if my child is suspended from school?
Only the Principal can suspend a student from school. The decision to
suspend a child is a serious one. The protocol for suspensions are outlined
in the NYC Department of Education's Discipline Code. Students who are
suspended from school for the first time, serve that suspension in our
Alternative Learning Site in school. Any student who is suspended more
than once, will be required to serve that suspension at another school
to be determined by the Principal. The number of days of suspension for
any violation of the Discipline Code is determined by the Principal.
What happens if my child is absent from school?
The Chancellor's Regulation requires all students to maintain a 90% rate
of attendance. This is one of the criteria for promotion for each grade.
This means that a student cannot be absent from school more than 18 days
each school year. Students who are absent from school will be marked as
such on the official attendance roster. Any student who is absent, needs
to bring a note to school upon return, explaining the Absence.
What happens if I need to pick my child up from school?
While we try to discourage students from missing any school, there are
times when it may be necessary to pick your child up early. Parents and
Guardians should report to the Main Office. Your child will be asked to
come downstairs and you will be required to sign your child out. Should
it be necessary for you to send another adult to pick up your child for
any reason, please be sure to include that person's name on the Blue Emergency
Contact Card. NO STUDENT WILL BE RELEASED TO ANY ADULT UNLESS THEIR NAME
APPEARS ON THIS BLUE EMERGENCY HOME CONTACT CARD. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS
TO THIS. Adults picking up children, will be asked for identification.
