Reading
Demonstrates deep understanding of text including elements of fiction. Derives information, makes connections and is able to critically examine and evaluate text. Demonstrates competency in analyzing fiction, non-fiction, public and functional documents. Reads 4 or more books related by author or genre (Standard E-1). Reads less than 4 related books. Demonstrates some understanding of text but makes few connections to other literature or life. Reads less than three books. Demonstrates little understanding of text.
Writing
Consistently develops a purpose and context suited to audience. Demonstrates style, tone, and voice. Grabs interest, provides sense of closure. Demonstrates competency in writing reports, responses to literature, narrative accounts, procedures and persuasive essays (Standard E-2). Meets some but not all standards for various mode of writing as outlined in Standard E-2. Meets few standards for various modes of writing.
Speaking, Listening, Viewing
Demonstrates proficiency in functions of speaking, listening and viewing. Furthers class discussion. Elaborates, questions, interprets, analyzes speech and media (Standard E-3). Participates in class discussions, but does not elaborate, question or analyze consistently. Does not participate in class discussions. Does not interpret speech or media adequately.
Conventions, Grammar, Usage
Consistently demonstrates ability to utilize correct forms of written English including spelling, punctuation, paragraphing, capitalization, subject/verb agreement. Usually understands conventions of grammar and usage with few common errors (Standard E-4). Often commits errors in grammar and usage. Does not write or speak using appropriate conventions of grammar and usage.
Classwork & Literature
Demonstrates proficiency in responding to non-fiction, fiction, poetry and drama using critical and evaluative processes. Demonstrates competency in reading and analyzing literature, connects themes and concepts (Standard E-5). Demonstrates a basic understanding of literature but does not identify or analyze its elements.. Does not interpret or analyze literature appropriately.
Classwork & Learning & Self-Management Tools & techniques
Maintains a disciplined schedule of assignments and work activities, sets goals and reviews progress. Maintains a schedule of assignments, keeps an orderly notebook, reviews progress. Poor maintenance of assignments, notebook poorly organized. Rarely hands in assignments, has no notebook or lacks organization.
